The mayor has banned vehicles from driving through the Italian capital on Sundays in a bid to tackle severe smog. Police have been advised to fine anyone who flouts the tough traffic restrictions.
In August the ZTL is always suspended at night in City Centre, Monti, Testaccio, Trastevere and San Lorenzo because of the summer holidays.
There are 6 different schemes in operation in Rome.
City Centre (night and day), covering the main centre of Rome.
The Access Regulation (ZTL) of Trastevere (night and day), San Lorenzo (night), Testaccio (night), Tridente (day and night) and Monti (night).
There is also a Low Emission Zone in Rome and Rome - Coaches, an access regulation for tourist buses.
There is also the possibility of emergency measures on days with extreme pollution, particularly in the winter. Options include banning alternating number plates, or a ban all vehicles. Notification is by the local press.
Dates and details
City Centre: Monday to Friday from 06:30 - 18:00, on Saturdays from 14:00 - 18:00.
Tridente: Monday to Friday from 06:30 - 19:00 and on Saturdays from 10:00 - 19:00.
Trastevere: daily from 06:30 - 10:00.
All these measures don't operate on public holidays.
City Centre, San Lorenzo, Testaccio, Trastevere and Monti:
Fridays and Saturdays from 23:00 - 03:00.
1st to 31st August the measure doesn’t operate.
From May to October this measure is also active on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 23:00 – 03:00.

Specific Rome exemptions:
Temporary permits for doctors, mayors, province and region presidents. Additional temporary permits:
1) Those who have a temporary physical disability due to accidents.
2) People travelling to work for meetings, conferences, cultural and sport events etc.
3) Public service companies.
4) Large goods transport by private citizens.
