The Milan ecopass scheme stopped working on 31.12.11.
There are several schemes in Milan:
- the Milan C, a combined Low Emission Zone and urban road charging scheme which now substitutes the old Milan ecopass scheme!
- the Milan - AR, an access regulation
- and the Milan province, a Low Emission Zones of the four provinces of Milan, Como, Varese and Lecco merging to give a 'paw print' shaped LEZ.
This page outlines the previous Ecopass Scheme.
The Ecopass charged vehicles according to their emissions, together with the regional LEZ that did not allow the more polluted vehicles to access during the winter.
The Area C charges a flat rate for vehicles, but does not allow diesel vehicles with a lower Euro standard than Euro 3, or petrol Euro 0 access.
Both the Ecopass and the Area C covered the same area, see the map below.

The charges for the Ecopass were:

  • More polluting vehicles charged
    for entry 7:30-19:30
    • Free: Class 1
      • AFV; gas, electric, hybrid
    • Free: Class 2
      • Petrol: cars Euro 3+
      • Diesel: cars & GV Euro 4+ or with filter
    • 2€/day: Class 3
      • Petrol Euro 1, 2
    • 5€/day: Class 4
      • Petrol: cars Euro 0; GV Euro 1, 2;
      • Diesel: cars Euro 3; GV Euro 3; buses Euro 4 & 5
    • 10€/day: Class 4
      • Diesel: cars Euro 0; GV Euro 0-2; bus Euro 0-3
  • Resident & multiple entry discounts were available for non-commercial vehicles only
  • LEZ controls from the regional LEZ were in operation in addition, during the winter months only (as the regional LEZ at that time was a winter LEZ).
