To use the motorway in Italy you have to pay a road charge (pedaggio). You can pay either cash, by credit card or with a prepaid card called Viacard. You can get Viacard also outside of Italy at the automobile club of your country, at motorway service areas and at the toll paying offices.

There is also the possibility to have a Viacard that is connected to a current account (VIACARD DI CONTO CORRENTE). Here you can find a list of all the banks offering this service. A lot of foreign banks included!

There is also the option to get an on-board-unit called Telepass

Only Telepass Ricaricabile is prepaid and can be used in Campania and Sicily and on some other parts in the South of Italy. With Telepass you don't have to stop at the tollbooth.

Make sure to be on the right lane when you get ot the tollbooths depending on the way you would like to pay. It is absolutely forbidden to turn around on the motorway! The Italian fines are very severe for doing so: 6000 €!

If you have entered the wrong lane, press the help button for assistance.

For more information about the current traffic situation, costs and general informations go to Autostrade per l'Italia (some information in English).
