After a number of delays, the new Palermo access restriction will start on 10 October 2016.

The new Zona a Traffico Limitato (ZTL) is smaller than the previous zone, but therefore an entry permit needs to be bought for every vehicle except motorbikes wanting to enter the centre of the city.

The new scheme in Palermo is a joint low emission zone, combined with a charge and permit scheme.

  • Low emission zone because there is an Euro standard,
  • Urban road charge because you have to pay to enter the zone and
  • Access regulation because a permit is required for different types of vehicles / trips.

Permits need to be purchased, for just one day or longer periods and can be bought online or in person in various offices throughout the city.
Electric vehicles receive a free permit, other permits are cheaper for cleaner vehicles.
