From 1 January 2023, there will be a LEZ in the whole Walloon region.
While the Walloon municipalities have been able to establish one or more low emission zones on their territory permanently or temporarily since 1 January 2020, none have yet confirmed schemes. So the Walloon region will now become a low emission zone from 2023.
Global context
Air pollution causes more than 400,000 premature deaths in Europe, including 9,300 in Belgium, as well as a large number of respiratory diseases and conditions and cardiovascular problems. Over time, transport has become the main emitting source. 48% are attributable to it, of which more than 60% to diesel vehicles.
This decree will also help meet European obligations, which in particular require a 59% reduction in NOx emissions by 2030 compared to 2005.
