Freiburg follows other cities such as Heidelberg, Karlsruhe and Schramberg, which have already ended their environmental zones.
At the Freiburg-Schwarzwaldstraße measuring station, nitrogen dioxide levels fell from 50 micrograms per cubic meter in 2018 to 25 micrograms per cubic meter in 2023. This is significantly below the European Union limit of 40 micrograms per cubic meter. According to District President Bärbel Schäfer, these positive developments are due, among other things, to the measures outlined in the 2019 Clean Air Plan, such as the renewal of the vehicle fleet and software updates for diesel vehicles.
