Kopenhagen's zero emission zone pilot ended

As a trial, Stefansgade was closed to gasoline and diesel-powered cars.

Following a pilot period initiated in spring 2023, the City of Copenhagen has formally concluded its experiment banning petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid vehicles from a segment of Stefansgade on Nørrebro. The trial, which aimed to test the feasibility of "green traffic streets" (grønne trafikveje), has been evaluated—and ultimately not extended into a permanent measure.
The City Council determined that Stefansgade would not be converted into a permanent green traffic street following the end of its December 2024 trial period. Instead, the street will transition to a “cykelgade” (bike street), a form of shared road primarily prioritising cyclists while still permitting motor vehicle access under regulated conditions.
