Mainz follows other cities such as Freiburg, Heidelberg, Karlsruhe and Schramberg, which have already ended their environmental zones.

Since 2024 air pollution in Mainz has been below legal limits, partly due to the further development of the vehicle fleet toward lower-emission vehicles. Therefore the environmental zone in the city of Mainz has been abolished October 1, 2025, and the requirement to display an environmental sticker when driving within the city of Mainz will no longer apply.
