Berlin 'diesel ban', 'Fahrverbot' or Euro 6 diesel low emission zone: first of 7 has now started.
Berlin had to implement diesel bans in several streets after a legal case. The DUH (Deutsche Umwelthilfe) had taken several German cities to make them comply with nitrogen dioxide (NO2) limits. Hamburg and Darmstadt are the two other cities in Germany that already have or had a zonal diesel ban. There are more legal proceedings pending for other German cities, for example Bonn, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Freiburg and München.
By putting up the road signs the low emission zone went in place in one street on the 22 November 2019. The signs for the remaining 7 streets (or part streets) are expected to be in place it the next week.
The streets affected are:
- Alt-Moabit from Gotzkowkystraße to Beusselstraße
- Brückenstraße from Köpenicker to Holzmarkstraße
- Friedrichstraße from Mittelstraße to Dorotheenstraße
- Hermannstraße from Silbersteinstraße to Emser Straße
- Leipziger Straße from Charlottenstraße to Leipziger Platz
- Reinhardstraße from Charitéstraße to Kapelle-Ufer
- Silbersteinstraße from Hermannstraße to Karl-Marx-Straße
- Stromstraße from Bugenhagenstraße to Turmstraße
