There is currently no Italian national scheme, but regional as well as individual city schemes.
However, there is a mobile phone app that can tell you when you are about to drive into a camera enforced ZTL.
Access is granted, at any time, to visitors who need to reach with their car a hotel where they have a booking - ask the hotel for the shortest, allowed itinerary - In both cases, visitors have to communicate immediately, every time of each passage, their car number plate details to the hotel, or garage.
Within the ZTL area, transit is always prohibited in the pedestrian zones and lanes reserved for public transportation. The latter are indicated with yellow lines and writing on the road and a sign that shows a lane reserved for bus/taxi.
There are various exemptions from the ZTL, but they all need a permit (means they are then registered in the white list) that has to be paid for!
- home care
- commercial garages
- car rental
- patients of hospital in ZTL
- taxi and hire service with driver
These vehicles can enter the white list for free:
- electric delivery vehicles
- ambulance, police, municipality, tow truck
- hotel guests
- vehicles going to public parking facilities
- people working in ZTL
- utility services
Zona a Traffico Limitato (ZTL) or Limitazioni della circolazione, the general name for all access regulation schemes, also used for LEZs.
